MARGARIDA ORFILA, OBRA PIANÍSTICA

ISABEL FÈLIX, piano
[Columna Música, 2020]

After years studying and looking for unpublished scores, Isabel Fèlix presents the first worldwide recording of the complete solo piano music by Margarida Orfila. It means rescuing from oblivion and vindicating a twentieth century composer. Margarida Orfila (Maó, 1889 – Barcelona, 1970) studied at the Escola Municipal de Música de Barcelona and she soon became a pianist and composer. At the age of seventeen she was appointed professor at the Conservatory, where she would teach until her retirement. Barcelona cultural life was particularly lively at the beginning of the twentieth century and this promoted her career, which was also closely linked to the Orfeó Català. She was awarded several prizes. Within her output, the compositions for piano are certainly the most significant, but she also wrote many songs, choral pieces, chamber music for strings and piano, and more. The high quality and individuality of her music make her worthy of a place in the repertoire of today’s pianists.

BARCELONA BELLE ÉPOQUE

LAURA GAYA, violin – ISABEL FÈLIX, piano
[Solfa Recordings, 2015]

Barcelona Belle Époque is a journey to Barcelona in the early 20th century through the music of composers known as the noucentista generation. Laura Gaya and Isabel Fèlix present on this album the complete works for violin and piano by four composers of that time: Joan Massià, Margarida Orfila, Manuel Blancafort and Frederic Mompou. Although all four show clearly resonances from the Catalan music, the first two can be considered as a continuation of the Germanic tradition. Orfila is ascribed to the prevalent postromantic trends in that time while Massià is most identified with neoclassicism. In contrast, Mompou and Blancafort were inspired by the French post-impressionist trends that fight against omnipresent passion for Wagnerism.

A L’OMBRA DEL PIANO

ISABEL FÈLIX, fortepiano
ORQUESTRA DE CAMBRA ILLA DE MENORCA – ANDREW WATKINSON, concertino & conductor
[Columna Música, 2010]

A musical journey to the agitated and disrupted Europe at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th centuries. It is not in vain that the magic of Menorca has brought the energy and enthusiasm of a group of young established British and Minorcan musicians to record the music of three composers themselves already established as young men: Haydn, Mozart and Schubert. Three works for three interpreters: the OCIM, a fresh and vigorous impulse; the talented young Minorcan pianist Isabel Fèlix, playing on a Walter & Sohn model fortepiano in the manner of those Enlightenment noblewomen who created and performed original cadenzas; the Glasgow-born guest conductor and concertmaster Andrew Watkinson, with his British logic and a historical criteria. In the manner of a cosmopolitan “Schubertiade” we are about to embark on a journey in the shade of a pine tree and a piano.
